Death Stranding Getting Second Anime, Isolations, Set For Disney+ in 2027

Everybody wants a piece of Death Stranding, it seems. On top of an upcoming live-action A24 film from director Michael Sarnoski and an anime film tentatively titled Death Stranding Mosquito, we just got news that another anime is on the way. Death Stranding Isolations (working title) will be an anime TV series that tells a separate story from the game. It’s set to release on Disney+ in 2027.

The announcement came at the Disney APAC Showcase, which also revealed the staff and studio working on it. It will be animated by E&H Production, a relatively new outfit that previously handled the One Piece spin-off Monsters, Ninja Kamui, and Bullet/Bullet (which was also exclusive to Disney+).

It will be directed by Takayuki Sano, who has previously done key animation on series like One Punch Man, Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, Hunter x Hunter, and more. Well-known illustrator Illya Kuvshinov (Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2045) drew the initial promotional image shown above and will be handling the character designs for the series. Hideo Kojima will act as executive producer. During the showcase, director Sano said, “We want this to be a global animation project, with global talent.”

The plot synopsis from Kojima Productions is as follows:

“Somewhere in North America, just as Sam Bridges walks through the continent in order to save America, the someones are also trying to deal with their isolation in their own way. An old man trying to realize salvation through ways outside of the connection advocated by Bridges. A female warrior who tries to kickstart a world of constant fighting. A boy with a grudge against Bridges. A girl who embraces loneliness.”

Based on this description, it sounds like something of an anthology series. Deadline quoted Kojima as having the following to say about the show and his collaboration with Disney during the presentation: “I grew up loving Japanese anime, and it has shaped my worldview. I’ve always been a fan of Disney, since I was small, and I was glad that they showed my documentary on the platform. When they approached me, I decided to work with them.”

Considering that Kojima Productions is likely shifting its focus from Death Stranding towards its upcoming stealth game, tentatively titled Physint, it appears that the studio plans to have the series live on through a bajillion adaptations.
