Here’s a Trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Nintendo held a Direct for the upcoming The Super Mario Galaxy Movie today, which included a trailer for the April film and the announcement of Brie Larson and Benny Safdie joining the cast.

Announced on Monday, this Direct was centred wholly around the upcoming film after its announcement during the Mario 40th Anniversary segment of the September Nintendo Direct. The trailer showed Bowser still stuck in miniature form after the end of the 2023 film, with his son Bowser Jr. seemingly taking his place as the sequel’s antagonist. At the end of the trailer, a gruff-voiced Megaleg mech attempts to abduct Rosalina and is taken down by her Star Wand.

Super Mario Galaxy was released for the Wii in 2007 and held by many as the best Mario platformer. Many aspects of the game feature in the new trailer, such as the Launch Stars used to rocket between areas and the game’s hub, the Cosmic Observatory. Rosalina’s appearance comes as no surprise in the trailer due to her central role in the original game, although she was never referred to as a “Princess” until now. With the games re-released in October, these touchstones are fresher than ever in the minds of many fans.

As with the first film, Galaxy is set to draw upon aspects from across the series, with the brothers biking to the Tostarena Inverted Pyramid from Super Mario Odyssey and Bowser Jr. taking on his fighting form from Super Mario Wonder, released after the previous film. Even Chef Toad from the Toadstool Cafe at Super Nintendo World appears in a new poster. Although Bowser Jr. is wielding his paintbrush as a weapon as usual, Bowser starts the trailer painting in his mini castle as part of his rehabilitation. Nice to see fathers and sons sharing their hobbies.

Following the trailer, Miyamoto, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri and Bowser actor Jack Black announced that Rosalina will be played by “Nintendo super-fan” Brie Larson (Captain Marvel, Envy Adams in Scott Pilgrim) while Bowser Jr. will be played by Benny Safdie, best known as the co-director of films like Uncut Gems with his brother Joshua. Miyamoto encouraged viewers to check the Nintendo Today! app for future updates on the film, as well as the recent Pikmin short, before the Direct closed.

Although we know that Yoshi will make an appearance in the film, as per the post-credits tease of the original and leaked images from promotional products, the dinosaur was nowhere to be seen in the Direct. It is likely that another, Yoshi-centric trailer will debut before the film’s April release. For now, you can watch the trailer below:
