New Speedrunning Event, Games Done Queer, Kicks off Today

If you’ve been hankering to watch people go alarmingly fast in your favorite video games, good news: GDQ is back with its latest speedrunning event, Games Done Queer, an all-new four-day marathon featuring 30+ runs from the LGBTQ+ community. The event starts today (October 31) at 12:30 p.m. ET and will stream until this Sunday, November 2.

Some highlights include Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze by MoahRikunel and Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem by Pandora_jane. Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo by LaurieDBunnykins should be another one to look out for, as that game’s movement abilities probably allow for some absurd game-breaking nonsense that will be a delight to watch. Another two I’m eager to watch are a pair of games with LGBTQ+ rep, the sapphic 2D platformer Kitsune Tails—platformers are always a fun time for speedrunning—and Deltarune Chapter 3.

Proceeds raised will go to the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, a civil rights NPO founded in 1973, which has been at the center of numerous legal battles concerning LGBTQ+ rights, including the 2003 Lawrence v. Texas case.

GDQueer’s website describes the organization as follows: “Lambda Legal defends and advances the rights of LGBTQ people and everyone living with HIV. As the nation’s oldest legal organization dedicated to achieving full recognition of the civil rights for these communities, Lambda Legal works through impact litigation, education and public policy work to secure justice and equality.”

“For more than 50 years, Lambda Legal has fought and won landmark legal victories that have shaped the landscape of equality in this country. Today, Lambda Legal serves as the last line of defense when LGBTQ+ rights are threatened and the organization is at the forefront of critical legal battles across the country. Lambda Legal is committed to challenging discrimination, defending hard-won civil rights protections, and fighting for a future where everyone can live with dignity and without fear.”

In recent years, GDQ has been experimenting with additional speedrunning events that run between its big biannual tentpoles—Awesome Games Done Quick in January and Summer Games Done Quick in the summer. For instance, there is Frost/Flame Fatales, a series of all-woman speedrunning marathons that raise money for organizations like the National Women’s Law Center.

All things considered, GDQ has raised more than $57.2 million for charity. Frankly, with all the doom and gloom around the game industry, it’s nice to have something positive to latch onto for a change.

You can watch GDQueer on GDQ’s Twitch channel.
