Rockstar Faces Union-Busting Accusations as Union Files Formal Legal Claim

Rockstar remains in hot water due to accusations of union busting, as the GTA developer now faces a formal legal claim filed by The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB). This comes after Rockstar fired over 30 employees on Oct. 30, 2025, claiming that the employees were engaging in “misconduct.” The IWGB has released a formal statement alongside the legal claim, asserting that Rockstar has been unfairly dismissing staff and engaging in union busting.

“We are representing employees who were dismissed by Rockstar Games in circumstances that we believe amount to victimisation and collective dismissal linked to trade union activity,” the IWGB legal team said in the statement. The team added that, while they have attempted to meet and resolve the situation through negotiation, “Rockstar have declined and persisted to terminate members of the union in a manner that is unacceptable and unlawful. Accordingly, we have now issued formal legal claims against Rockstar on behalf of the Claimants.”

Alex Marshall, the president of the IWGB, added: “We are confident that what we’ve seen here is plain and simple union busting, and we will mount a full legal defence with our expert group of caseworkers, legal officers and barristers. Employers like Rockstar would do well to understand that private spaces such as trade union Discord servers have protections, and that their company’s contractual clauses do not supersede UK law.”

The IWGB led protests outside the offices of Rockstar North and Take-Two Interactive prior to this legal claim, and GTA VI has been delayed again to Nov. 19, 2026. In an earlier statement, IWGB president Alex Marshall said, “management are showing they don’t care about delays to GTA VI, and that they’re prioritizing union-busting by targeting the very people who make the game.”

One can only hope that this legal claim opens a path for those laid off to get some semblance of justice and closure for what has transpired. Alex Marshall concluded the most recent statement by saying, “this case stands as a warning to any employer in the games industry and beyond who thinks they are able to act with impunity against organised workers – we will not be intimidated.”
