Get ready to uncover some treasure, because Amazon Prime Video is working on a live-action adaptation of Tomb Raider. The series will begin production on January 19, 2026, as reported by Variety.
The show appears to be in great hands; it is being created, written, and executive produced by Fleabag creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Chad Hodge, creator of Wayward Pines, is also on board as executive producer and co-showrunner for the series. Shogun director Jonathan van Tulleken will serve as director and executive producer as well.
The show will feature Sophie Turner starring as Lara Croft. Turner is best known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, and her involvement in the Tomb Raider series was announced in November 2024. “I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team,” said Waller-Bridge. “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is.”
The series, which was originally greenlit in May 2024, is being produced by Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios.
The Tomb Raider franchise has sold over 100 million units worldwide, with Lara Croft’s icon status undisputed. Previous film adaptations include the 2018 movie Tomb Raider starring Alicia Vikander and 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider starring Angelina Jolie; Jolie also starred in a 2003 sequel.
“I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft,” Turner said. “She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many—and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
