Upcoming Splinter Cell TV Series Gets New Trailer

Sam Fisher is almost back, even if it isn’t in the form many have been asking for. Splinter Cell: Deathwatch is an upcoming animated TV series headed for Netflix on October 14 from Ubisoft Film & Television. The show received its first trailer today, showcasing an aged Sam Fisher, the field commander of the U.S. government’s stealth unit Fourth Echelon, alongside newcomer Zinnia McKenna, as the pair snuck around and shot guys—just like in the video game! There were hints of evil corporations, intrigue, and betrayals.

The synopsis provided by Netflix is as follows: “In the shadowy world of espionage, Sam Fisher is a rumor and a legend. Pulled back into action, he must help a new recruit unravel a global conspiracy.” From this, it’s clear that the show won’t be an origin story, but will instead follow an aging Fisher, presumably after the events of the previous games—Fourth Echelon was established in the most recent entry in the series, Blacklist. Notably, Michael Ironside, the longstanding voice of Sam Fisher, will not be returning to the character. Instead, Liev Schreiber will take up the role. Beyond this, Kirby Howell-Baptiste will play Zinnia McKenna, and Janet Varney will play Fourth Echelon team member Anna “Grim” Grímsdóttir.

The series was developed and written by Derek Kolstad, the creator of the John Wick series. It’s being animated as a co-production between Sun Creature Studio, which created the acclaimed 2021 film Flee, and Fost animation studio, which handled the similarly celebrated The Summit of the Gods. In short, there are certainly some promising names attached, something evident in the trailer’s smooth action.

The Splinter Cell series has been dormant for well over a decade, with the last major installment, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, having been released in 2013 to a generally positive reception. Unfortunately, since AAA publishers mostly only create live service titles or continuations of their ultra-flagships these days, Sam Fisher has been left in retirement. We’ll see if this upcoming show is enough to pull him back in, or if it’s more intended as a (less expensive) way to appease long-suffering fans.
