Beetlejuice Is Getting a Pinball Machine, and It Seems to Be Voice-Activated

Open secrets are as common in pinball as, well, pinball machines based on ’80s movies. The latest example: Spooky Pinball has confirmed that they’re working on a Beetlejuice game—something that’s been rumored for months. Spooky officially revealed that the machine does actually exist late last week, and yesterday posted a video to their social media accounts that offers a very brief glimpse of the machine; you can watch that belove.

Beetlejuice, of course, is a property that seems like a perfect fit for pinball—and Spooky Pinball, in particular. A perennially popular, kid-friendly ’80s horror comedy that launched a franchise featuring toys, a cartoon, a long-running theme park show, and a (very belated) sequel—and one that has an iconic soundtrack, to boot? That’s basically what every pinball company looks for. And Spooky, per its name, loves games with horror connections, whether they’re bloody gore bombs like the megahit Evil Dead machine, or more family-friendly explorations of the macabre, like Spooky’s Scooby Doo game. (No idea where Looney Tunes fit in there, but hey, it’s Looney Tunes: it’s insane there hasn’t been, like, half a dozen pinball machines about those goofballs.)

The biggest news about the machine confirmed in the teaser video is that it’ll be voice activated. As you can see, a woman approaches the machine, says “Beetlejuice” three times in a row, and then the machine fully comes to life. That could’ve easily been dismissed as marketing trickery, but the teaser ends with a graphic promoting Spooky Speak: Voice Interactive Pinball, so I think it’s safe to assume you will be saying that dude’s name three times at some point during the game. Will it be at the very start of every game? Or will there be a mode or mission that’s only triggered by invoking the ghost with the most? Only Spooky knows right now.

One other important fact the teaser confirms: based on the backglass art, it is based on Tim Burton’s original 1988 movie and not the sequel exclusively, and Spooky does apparently have likeness rights to the major actors from the movie. You can clearly see Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Geena Davis, and Alec Baldwin on the art. You can’t see Jeffrey Jones—the disgraced actor and registered sex offender who played family patriarch Charles Deetz, and who has only a handful of screen credits since a 2004 arrest. His character was killed off-screen before the 2024 sequel, and can easily be ignored by a pinball machine.

The teaser promises more information on November 14, which is also the game’s release day. In a post on a Pinside forum, a Spooky employee confirmed there would be 999 units of the machine available for $9,999 (without a topper, which will cost extra, of course). According to the Knapp Arcade blog, distributor waiting lists for the game are already filling up with deposits, so this could be a hard machine to buy; Knapp notes that Spooky will be selling some units directly through their site on November 14, and also points out that a few dozen extra machines will be manufactured to display and sell at pinball shows like Pinball Expo. Still, if you’ve been waiting for a Beetlejuice pin since 1988, you might have to act real fast to add this one to your collection.

Here’s that teaser, and we’ll be back with more info on November 14.
