Kyoto Animation’s Next TV Series Is Sparks of Tomorrow, Will Release in 2026

Last weekend Kyoto Animation announced during its “Meet the Worlds of KyoAni” in-person event that its adaptation of Hiro Yūki’s light novel 20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku (20th Century Electricity Catalog) will air in 2026. The anime’s English title is Sparks of Tomorrow, and KyoAni offered the following teaser image alongside a teaser trailer.

The show’s English language website offers the following description: “A Tale of Adventure for Boys and Girls Who Dreamed of the Age of Electricity in a World Shrouded in Smoke! This was a little while ago. Kyoto in the early 20th century, having evolved differently from the history we know today. In a world where only steam engines had advanced, the city was shrouded in smoke.”

“A boy who lost his brother, with whom he had dreamed of the “Age of Electricity,” and now lives with deep suspicion. A girl who keeps her dreams for the future and her regrets for her deceased mother hidden in her heart, now living a devout life. The boy and girl meet while seeking the secret of the “20th Century Electrical Catalog,” which depicted their dreams. Surpass who you are now and break through the dreams you once had! This is the story of <regeneration>.”

Beyond the plot description, there’s also an overview of what the studio is going for with the series on the site: “Kyoto Animation’s new frontier. With challenging art backgrounds reminiscent of Impressionist paintings and intricate animation, it depicts the dreams of boys and girls shining in an era of upheaval and innovation.”

As for the staff, Minoru Ota (Key Animation on Liz and the Blue Bird, A Silent Voice, Nichijou, Sound! Euphonium, Violet Evergarden) will be making his directorial debut. Ota was recently the episode director and storyboarder for episode 5 of CITY The Animation, which proved one of the most ambitious and creative episodes of the year so far.

The rest of the staff announced are as follows:

  • Series Composition: Tatsuhiko Urahata
  • Character Design & Chief Animation Director: Kohei Okamura
  • Worldview Setting: Takaaki Suzuki
  • Music: Hitomi Koto

As for the cast, Yuma Uchida (Kyou in Fruits Basket, Megumi in Jujutsu Kaisen) will play Kihachi Sakamoto, and Sora Amamiya (Aqua in Konosuba, Nazuna in Call of the Night, Kanade in Sound! Euphonium) will play Inako Momokawa.

Kyoto Animation previously announced that they would be adapting 20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku back in 2018. KyotoAni awarded the novel an honorable mention at the 8th Kyoto Animation Awards in May 2017.

Considering the studio’s track record of consistently creating some of the best-looking and most creatively animated shows in recent memory, like Violet Evergarden, Sound! Euphonium, CITY The Animation, and more, the team’s latest comes with high expectations.
