Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc Gets Explosive New Trailer

It seems that our collective patience might finally be rewarded, because the latest trailer for Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc just came out, and it’s the bomb. Here, we see Denji continuing his (not at all compulsory) devil-slaying duties in service of the Public Safety department, as he fights a deadly new threat who enjoys blowing things up. Meanwhile, there are also some hints at “romance,” both in the nightmarish grooming situation with his boss, Makima, and with a mysterious newcomer, Reze.

At least in this brief snippet, MAPPA studio is not playing around: fluid action, colorful pyrotechnics, and crying Kobenis showcase some very impressive animation work for the film debuting in US theaters on October 24. In addition to this trailer, Sony Pictures Entertainment also released a minute-long recap video intended to get viewers up to speed on the basic premise of the series. Additionally, Crunchyroll recently received a recap film that will more comprehensively get viewers caught up.

For those outside the know, the story follows Denji, an orphaned teen living in poverty who ends up fusing with his cute animal sidekick Pochita after suffering a grievous injury. It turns out that Pochita is actually an all-powerful “Devil” (dangerous beings that personify human fears), and after combining, Denji is given superhuman powers like regeneration and the ability to sprout chainsaws from his arms. From here, he’s forced to serve the Japanese government’s Public Safety Division by hunting other Devils, or they will kill him. It’s a raw deal, but having grown up being extorted by the mob, he views this terrible arrangement as an improvement.

It’s been almost three years since MAPPA produced its anime adaptation of the popular Chainsaw Man manga in a 12-episode season that handled the first 38 chapters out of 213. Meanwhile, the Reze arc, which the upcoming film is adapting, runs from chapters 39-52. Good news, at the current pace, it will only take roughly a decade for them to catch up to the source material, which is still releasing chapters weekly!

In all seriousness, the production circumstances are a bit unique here: instead of relying on a production committee—a collection of corporations that front the cost for the series and reap the vast majority of its profits as a result—like with most anime, the studio instead opted to finance the show itself, something they seem to be doing with the latest film as well. It means they bear the costs of the project but receive most of the profits; because of this, it seems they wanted to get the adaptation right, instead of rushing it out the door like they did with parts of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2. Regardless, we’ll see how their efforts pan out when the film finally comes out late next month.
