New Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt Will End With Hour-Long Finale

It seems that New Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt will go out with a bang. Yesterday, the show’s social media account announced that the series’ final episode will be a one-hour finale which includes its 12th and 13th episodes back-to-back. It will premiere next Wednesday (September 24) on Prime Video.

If I had to guess, like the original series, it will probably include a climactic battle against a barely mentioned big-bad, in this case, probably Polyurethane and Polyester’s dad. Maybe these dirtbag boys will even team up with our main crew, much like Scanty and Kneesocks ended up doing last time around; who can say?

For those who haven’t watched it, New Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt is the sequel to the 2010 series produced by Gainax, a crude, over-the-top action comedy about two “angels,” Panty and Stocking, who battle spirits called “Ghosts” at the behest of heaven. Of course, these sisters are only on Earth in the first place out of punishment for their obscene actions. Put simply, the series plays like an ultra-vulgar parody of Cartoon Network shows from the aughts.

Directed by Studio Trigger founder Hiroyuki Imaishi, who handled the original series at Gainax, this second season has been a madcap collection of shorts that range from continuations of last season’s storylines to bizarre one-offs, like a truly inspired Conan the Barbarian homage. Have all of these segments been good? No! However, when they hit, they combine over-the-top comedy with Trigger’s knack for maximalist action animation. Problems aside, it’s been an enjoyable watch thus far, and a small miracle that the series has returned after ending on a cliffhanger 15 years ago.

As for what Studio Trigger has coming down the pipeline, it is currently working on the second season of Cyberpunk Edgerunners as well as contributing to Star Wars Visions Season 3. Additionally, while it hasn’t been explicitly stated that they’ll be working on the second season of Delicious In Dungeon, it’s probably fair to assume that they will return to produce this already announced follow-up.
