Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Manga Goes On Hiatus Due To Authors’ Health Issues

Yesterday, fans of the award-winning fantasy manga, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, got some unfortunate news: the series is going on a hiatus due to health issues concerning the series’ authors, Kanehito Yamada (story) and Tsukasa Abe (art).

The series’ official account on X posted the news, which, according to a translation from Crunchyroll, reads as follows: “Considering the health of both Kanehito Yamada-sensei and Tsukasa Abe-sensei, we have consulted with them about future serialization after the next issue. The manga will be taking a hiatus for a while as we adjust the serialization pace and publication format to deliver the continuation of the story. Both authors are currently continuing their works. The editorial department will also continue to support them. The specific publication date will be announced in future issues of Weekly Shonen Sunday.”

Frieren began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Sunday in 2020 and has since run for 146 chapters across 14 volumes (with its 15th volume coming out in Japan on December 18). It has won numerous awards, including the Manga Taishō, Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize’s New Creator Prize, the Shogakukan Manga Award, and the Kodansha Manga Award. It also has a very impressive 30 million copies in circulation.

The series was then adapted into an anime by Madhouse and director Keiichirō Saitō in September 2023, running for 28 episodes. It received widespread acclaim for its gorgeous animation, unique take on fantasy tropes, and weighty ruminations on grief. The show’s second season is coming out on January 16.

The series follows the powerful elven mage Frieren decades after she and her companions defeated the Demon King, as she grapples with her near immortality and searches for a new sense of purpose.

Dedicated manga readers have rightfully come to dread the term “hiatus.” There is a severe culture of overwork among many mangaka, something that has led to many authors developing chronic health issues that make it impossible for them to continue to release their series at regular intervals: the author of Hunter x Hunter, Yoshihiro Togashi, developed severe back problems that have led to many hiatuses for that series. Hopefully, the creatives behind Frieren get the rest they deserve and are able to have long and healthy careers.
