For those outside the know, Chainsaw Man is Shonen Jump’s latest hit manga with over 30 million copies sold, and it received an anime adaptation from MAPPA back in 2022. Now, three years later, the adaptation is continuing with Reze Arc, a highly anticipated film being distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing worldwide.
As for the setup, the story takes place in a world terrorized by Devils, creatures born from human fears. One day, an impoverished teenager named Denji is saved by the Chainsaw Devil and fuses to become Chainsaw Man. However, it doesn’t take long before the Japanese government forces him to join a state-sponsored team of Devil Hunters.
Trust me, though, this description doesn’t even scratch the surface—the manga’s creator, Tatsuki Fujimoto, is known for subverting expectations, and he certainly does so throughout the series’ genuinely bonkers run. Slapstick comedy, tragedy, and gore combine into a truly singular story.
The manga’s first part ran from 2018 to 2020, while the second part began in 2022 and is ongoing. Hopefully, MAPPA will at least slightly pick up this adaptation’s pace going forward, because since the first season aired, Fujimoto has released far more chapters than they adapted the first time around.
