Square Enix Releases Moogle-Themed Final Fantasy Board Game

Today, Square Enix released Final Fantasy: Moogle Bounty Mayhem, a new board game starring, you guessed it, moogles. You play as one of six moogle siblings, each with their own unique abilities, while competing to defeat monsters like Cactoids and Antlions.

Moogle Bounty Mayhem was designed by Seiji Kanai, the creator of Love Letter, which previously won fourth place at the 2014 Deutscher Spielepreis board game awards. Additionally, the game’s illustrations were handled by Ryoma Ito, who oversaw art design on Final Fantasy XII.

Kanai offered the following message about the game: “While the game is a trendy, short-duration game, it is a challenging game in which the cards and intentions of the players are intricately intertwined. I hope you enjoy the game along with Mr. Ito’s wonderful illustrations!”

It is aimed at 2 to 4 players, and a match apparently takes approximately 15 minutes. Each session will see players facing off against different monsters with their moogle’s ability cards while also making use of Hero cards that feature Final Fantasy XII’s party members. The game is available on Square Enix’s Store for $50.99 and contains six moogle sibling cards, six hero cards, 10 monster cards, and more.

If you want to dive head-first into the game’s full rules, those can be found here, but the overview reads:

“Each player takes on the role of one of the six Moogle siblings. Each Moogle has a unique set of Battle Cards. The aim is to be the best in the mob hunt, defeating monsters in various regions. Monsters are placed between each player and in the centre of the play area. Players take turns preparing to defeat them by playing Battle Cards. However, each monster has different characteristics, so sometimes a little more strategy is required than simply playing the strongest card. Players can also play cards face down to hide the strength and abilities of the cards they have played. Use strategies that serve you best against each monster and bluff with face down cards to gain more victory points.”
