Marvel Rivals Season 3 Is Here Alongside Jean Grey and Removal of Dailies

Marvel Rivals continues to truck along, entering its third season today alongside a new playable character, updated rewards, the removal of dailies, and quite a few UI tweaks.

First and foremost, the update adds Phoenix to the game, a version of Jean Grey who has mastered the Phoenix Force, giving her the ability to control fire. She’s a Duelist character who combines mobility, thanks to her dash and flight abilities, with some potentially strong damage potential (if you land your shots, that is). Her primary fire is Cosmic Flames, a fast 50 damage projectile that applies Sparks on hit. If you land three Sparks on the same enemy, it triggers a 40 damage explosion that also heals Jean a total of 40 health over 4 seconds. Basically, her mobility gives her the ability to easily find flanking angles, and her damage output seems potentially solid if you’re able to consistently trigger Spark explosions. Phoenix joins the game alongside Celestial Husk, a new map for the Domination mode. Later this season, she will also be joined by the new hero Blade.

Beyond Jean Grey, the latest season is themed around a showdown between the Phoenix Force and Knull’s symbiotes, meaning most of the new costumes in the Season 3 Battle Pass are related to one or the other. While this dramatically limits the range of this season’s fits, the good news is that you can unlock the Bully Maguire dance from Spider-Man 3, so that’s pretty cool.

However, arguably the biggest change going forward is that NetEase Games has opted to remove Daily Rewards from the game, apparently redistributing the rewards earned here across weekly and season-long rewards. This should make it so that players won’t feel as forced to play the game every single day, while still theoretically allowing players to earn the same amount of in-game currency, which sounds like a win if it works as intended.

However, at the same time, the total duration of seasons has been decreased going forward, going from three months to two, which will coincide with faster character releases but also mean that there’s less time to collect rewards. That said, at least progress is much easier to track now, thanks to many smaller UI adjustments, like how you’re shown your latest progress towards event and Battle Pass rewards after each match.

Lastly, the latest season also comes with several balance changes and new Team-Up abilities. The full balance updates can be viewed here, but some highlights are that The Thing has received a boost to his mobility, Namor’s projectile speed has been increased, and heroes like Spider-Man, Mantis, and Emma Frost received nerfs. As for team-ups, there are two additions alongside several adjustments, with Spider-Man gaining the Inferno Blast ability from Human Torch, and Wolverine getting the ability to set foes on fire from Jean Grey.

As we head into Season 3, it will be interesting to see how Marvel Rivals’ faster release cadence for characters and season rewards affects the game going forward: will it add welcome variety or make Battle Passes feel too rushed? We’ll find out for sure in the coming months.
