Nintendo Switch 2 Pricing Won’t Change Due To Tariffs, But Controller Costs Will

Two weeks after Nintendo pushed back Switch 2 pre-orders and revealed that a price increase may be on the way in the United States due to the Trump administration’s tariffs, the company has announced that the suggested retail price of the console will remain at $449.99, and the Mario Kart World bundle will stay at $499.99. Additionally, they also stated that pre-orders will open on April 24 in the US. Pre-orders were originally planned to begin on April 9.
However, it wasn’t all good news because in response to the tariffs, peripheral prices are going up. Most of the increases are by $5, with the Switch 2 Pro Controller going from $79.99 to $84.99 and the Joy-Con 2s increasing from $89.99 to $94.99. The Switch 2 Camera, All-In-One Carrying Case, Carrying Case & Screen Protector, and AC Adapter are all going up by $5 as well, and the Dock Set is increasing by $10. The reason cited for these price hikes was “changes in market conditions,” and Nintendo made sure to note that “other adjustments to the price of any Nintendo product are also possible in the future depending on market conditions.” By contrast, game prices appear stable, with physical and digital editions of Mario Kart World remaining at a hefty $79.99 and Donkey Kong Bananza staying at $69.99.
While the news is likely a relief to many who were dreading that the Trump administration’s previous 47% tariffs on Vietnam, where most Nintendo hardware is produced, could have lead to the Switch 2 costing up to $600, it still remains to be seen how the console rollout will go, as recent hardware releases have been even more defined by scarcity and battles with scalpers than usual. And that’s not even taking into account the initially hostile reaction to the Switch 2’s price, best exemplified by how Nintendo’s live streams were over by pleas to “DROP THE PRICE” after the system’s announcement. Regardless, we don’t have long to see how it all plays out, with pre-orders beginning within the week. The full breakdown of pricing for the Nintendo Switch 2 and its peripherals can be viewed below:
