Massive Pokémon Leaks Details Future Games, Budgets, And More

Ahead of Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s release this Thursday, the hacker behind last year’s “teraleak”, which included internal documents and employee information, has shared more. This includes the source code and beta builds of the newest game, as well as budgetary information and the next five years of planned titles.

In August 2024, an “unauthorised third party” gained access to one of Pokémon developer GameFreak’s servers. Although the company’s statement, dated October 10 and put out on October 13, 2024, was focused on the 2600 items of personal data taken in the hack, much of the conversation revolved around the game-related leaks shared by a Discord user using the name “GameFreakOUT” (GFO), including source code for some of the DS titles and internal lore ideation documents.

The leaks continued for a month until the hacker announced in their “FreakLeak” community on the messaging app Discord that they would be going offline for their safety, likely concerned about legal action. Indeed, in April, Nintendo sent a subpoena to Discord requesting the identity of GFO under the DMCA (thanks to Nicole Carpenter for sharing the legal documentation). In GameFreak’s statement following the leak, they said they had “rebuilt and inspected the server” and were strengthening their security measures to prevent this from happening again.

In their parting statement, GFO made their motivations clear, saying that they did not care about fame or money and that “there is no need to keep the account/persona/whatever alive”. They also cast aspersions on leakers such as Centro, the self-proclaimed “biggest source of Pokémon leaks, rumors and news”, from whom most people are learning about the current wave of leaks. After GFO started erasing their trail, an associate claimed that more verified information would come out “at a later date”.

Now, almost a year later, the leaks have returned. Forum threads on Reddit and ResetEra are flooded with screenshots and leaked information about the next five years of Pokémon games.

[Editor’s Note: If you care about staying spoiler-free on the potential future of the franchise, the leak specifics are in the next two paragraphs.]

Chief among these is information about the upcoming Generation titles, Pokémon Wind/Wave, which corroborates pre-existing logo leaks. There are videos and concept art detailing many mechanics that may appear in the game, and those that were cut from Pokémon Legends: Z-A, like a 4v4 multiplayer mode. Most promising of all the leaked projects is the MMO codenamed “Seed”. The leaked slides show an interconnected version of Pokémon’s Japan, linking the regions of the first four games—Kanto, Sinnoh, Johto, and Hoenn—in an open world with dynamic seasons.

Considering that the leak was believed to hold up to 1 TB of data, and given GameFreak’s strengthened security, it is probable that all of the information coming out now is a year old, and thus the exact details may be subject to change in the years to come. That is to say, if Pokémon Legends: Z-A started out as a Johto revisit, don’t be surprised if Seed or the Generation 10 titles come out looking different than they do here. The status of the employees’ personal data included in the initial leak is still unknown.
