Massive Pokémon Leaks Details Future Games, Budgets, And More

Ahead of Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s release this Thursday, the hacker behind last year’s “teraleak”, which included internal documents and employee information, has shared more. This includes the source code and beta builds of the newest game, as well as budgetary information and the next five years of planned titles.
In August 2024, an “unauthorised third party” gained access to one of Pokémon developer GameFreak’s servers. Although the company’s statement, dated October 10 and put out on October 13, 2024, was focused on the 2600 items of personal data taken in the hack, much of the conversation revolved around the game-related leaks shared by a Discord user using the name “GameFreakOUT” (GFO), including source code for some of the DS titles and internal lore ideation documents.
The leaks continued for a month until the hacker announced in their “FreakLeak” community on the messaging app Discord that they would be going offline for their safety, likely concerned about legal action. Indeed, in April, Nintendo sent a subpoena to Discord requesting the identity of GFO under the DMCA (thanks to Nicole Carpenter for sharing the legal documentation). In GameFreak’s statement following the leak, they said they had “rebuilt and inspected the server” and were strengthening their security measures to prevent this from happening again.
