Pokémon TCG Pocket Is Adding Improved Trading, Card Gifting, And More

After a bit of a rough stretch, Pokémon TCG Pocket developer DeNA announced that several highly requested features are coming to their mobile card collecting game, including improvements to trading, the ability to share cards with friends, and upgrades to its Wonder Pick functionality.

As for sharing, while you could previously trade a card of the same rarity with someone on your friend list, there wasn’t a way to gift cards outright; now you will be able to do so. Admittedly, there are still some restrictions, as you can only receive one card a day this way, and you can only gift cards up to a maximum rarity of four diamonds (this is the rarest tier of non-alternative art cards). But even with these limitations, it’s still a big improvement over the current system.

Beyond this, trading has also been bolstered in a big way. The pool of tradable cards has expanded, and you can now trade two-star and shiny cards, which have rare alternative art. Before, you could trade cards up to a maximum of four diamond rarity. While three-star and crown rare cards are still untradable, there is a sizable cool of two-star rarity cards (especially the flashy Supporter cards) that were previously only obtainable through highly unfavorable pull rates.

Another big improvement is that cards from the most recent expansion can now be traded—before the most recent expansion was off limits for trading, meaning if you were playing competitively, you had to hope you’d luck out and get the latest meta cards before the next set releases and the meta resets.

Lastly, two more features were announced: with Wonder Picks, “cards not registered in your card dex will appear more often,” and you can automatically obtain flairs without spending shinedust.

To explain the former, Wonder Picks let you consume a stamina resource to get one randomized card from another player’s recently opened pack. You select which pack you get a card from, meaning players usually prioritize packs with cards they want. Now, it will apparently be more likely to see cards that you haven’t received yet. While it would be nice if what appears in Wonder Pick was influenced by your Wishlist instead (this lets you select the specific cards you’re looking for), it’s still a big improvement.

As for the last addition, flair is a largely ignored cosmetic option that lets you add graphical effects to cards by spending shinedust. The problem? Shinedust is a resource that’s also used for trading, so most players ignore flairs altogether. It seems that flairs will now be acquired “automatically,” presumably after you get a certain number of duplicates of a card.

The changes come after the game experienced a 50% drop in revenue from August to September, alongside backlash regarding the latest set, which, for the first time, made it virtually impossible for free-to-play players to collect all of the cards in the standard card Dex. While Pokémon TCG Pocket still has many problems (including the previously mentioned issues with the latest set), the changes show that DeNA is at least attempting to course-correct.
