Shovel Knight Studio Yacht Club Games Delays Mina the Hollower Indefinitely

The independent video game studio Yacht Club Games announced in a blog post on Oct. 6 that their latest project, Mina the Hollower, would be delayed from its Halloween release date. The studio is best known for their debut hit Shovel Knight, with Mina the Hollower being their first project unrelated to the successful 8-bit platformer.

“The entire crew has been working tirelessly day and night to finish development for release on Oct. 31, but we’re just not quite there yet. This isn’t a major delay, it’s just a stretch of time to apply some final polish and balancing to make the game truly shine,” the studio wrote on their official website. “Our goal is to make sure our development team has the time and resources to deliver an incredible adventure and we will be giving you just that. That’s no hollow promise!”

Mina the Hollower was originally announced in Feb. 2022, taking gameplay inspiration from Castlevania and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. Like their first project Shovel Knight, Mina the Hollower was fully funded on Kickstarter, raising $1.2 million. In it, you play as a mouse with a whip and navigate dungeons filled with traps and secrets. Yacht Club Games described it as “a bone-chilling, action-adventure featuring classic gameplay with an 8-bit aesthetic in the style of the Game Boy Color but refined for the modern era.”

The developers have not announced a new date for the title, saying they are currently working on finalizing design, art, sound, game balance, localization, and QA. “We don’t want to announce another release date until it’s submitted to platforms, so please hang tight as we reach the finish line. The game is so close to being done—we’re playing it from start to finish every day.”

We will have to wait and see if Yacht Club Games’ latest will arrive in time for the holiday season. For now, it remains hotly anticipated by fans of Shovel Knight, Link’s Awakening, and whip-wielding mice everywhere.
