Hyper Light Drifter Studio’s Next Game, Possessor(s), Gets November 11 Release Date

Possessor(s), the next game from Hyper Light Drifter Studio Heart Machine, received a November 11 release date for PC and PS5 earlier today. The Devolver Digital-published game is a Metroid-style experience set in a city destroyed by demons.

You play as Luca, a high-schooler trapped in Sanzu City, who makes a pact with a demon, Rhem, after suffering from mortal injuries. Together, the pair needs to work together to escape this quarantined city and hopefully restore some semblance of balance between the human and demon worlds.

Having played the demo and enjoyed it, the game’s movement and combat heavily borrow from games like Super Smash Bros., letting you air dodge to avoid attacks while juggling enemies with improvised combos.

And then there’s the art style, which is one of the big draws for the experience: the character portraits are bold illustrations that do a good job getting across the characters’ personalities. This setting is quite grim, with the influx of demons completely obliterating this community, but an interesting twist is that these hellish interlopers didn’t destroy this place out of malice, but due to factors outside of their control.

While I dug what I saw of the game’s narrative and thought its platform fighter-inspired gameplay was quite slick, Possessor(s)’ steepest hill to climb will likely be competing against the glut of Metroid-style games out there (it should be noted that Heart Machine is pushing the term “search action” to describe their game, which I can get behind because “Metroidvania” is an awful genre descriptor). Especially in a year where Hollow Knight Silksong looms large, it may be tough to stand out, but at least its sharp art means it may very well catch eyeballs.
