Gorillaz Bring Back Their ’90s Flash Game Site

In a bit of pleasantly surprising news, Gorillaz has revived Kong Studios, their old Flash game site themed around the band’s fictional recording studio. Kong Studios was first launched in 1998 and ran for exactly one decade before closing in 2008. In that time, the site enjoyed regular updates that allowed fans to explore virtual rooms, discover secrets, play mini-games, and, of course, listen to music.

Fans will be excited to discover Kong Studios is back, as the virtual band released an updated version of the site yesterday, September 10. The new site features a first-person shooter segment where you’re tasked with fighting off gorillas à la the “Clint Eastwood” music video, though it can also be skipped if it’s not your thing. Once you make it through the horde of virtual gorillas, you will arrive at the lobby of a much higher-resolution Kong Studios, where you can click around to explore the area. Gorillaz promises there will be more content and rooms added to the new Kong Studios soon.

According to the Kong Studios FAQ page, “Kong Studios is the home of Gorillaz and a gamified fan experience where you can explore the rooms and spaces of 2D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel. It’s also a place to go to find out everything you want to know about Gorillaz, first.” Due to the tragic death of Flash in 2020, the new site is powered by HTML5 and Javascript.

The reopening of Kong Studios comes in tandem with Gorillaz announcing their ninth studio album, The Mountain, which will be released next March through the virtual band’s new Kong label.

In a world where it feels like every single online space belongs to megacorporations with the most sinister algorithmic skinner box designs known to man, Kong Studios is a refreshing reminder of what the Internet used to be brimming with: fun, creative spaces that are designed to bring joy, rather than keep you scrolling for eternity.
