Counting on demand to persist in the coming holiday months and into the new year, the Japanese company is asking its manufacturing partners to ramp up production. Nintendo is already expected to surpass analysts’ 17.6 million Switch 2 sales estimate by the end of the fiscal year, ending in March. Shipping estimates from assembly partners expect the Switch 2 to sell approximately 20 million units.
The Switch 2 already set records back in its launch month, becoming the fastest selling video game console in US history after selling 1.6 million units, with 5.8 million units sold globally. Sales on the console are 77% ahead of the original Switch release in 2017, according to Circana research, and Nintendo is projected to report 68% growth in quarterly revenue next month when it unveils earnings.
Despite the United States’ tariffs and any initial criticisms of the console, it is clear that the Switch 2 has surpassed every expectation. October 2025’s release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A is likely to generate yet another surge in Switch 2 purchases, with the popular franchise title being sold both individually and in a bundle with the console. This comes after the previously bundled Mario Kart World, which had a 96.7% attachment rate in the first month after launch.
While Nintendo’s console is expected to hit 20 million units sold, only time will tell if it can reach the even more ambitious goal of 25 million. The Switch 2 has towered above the struggles that rivals Sony and Microsoft faced in their most recent console launches during the pandemic, which saw limited availability and supply chain disruptions.
