Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game (Re)Announced, Slated For Summer 2026.

This weekend, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, a 2D fighter based on the popular series, was announced with a Summer 2026 release date. Well, technically, it was announced for the second time: the game was previously unveiled by Maximum Entertainment in a 2024 financial report, but was cancelled last year.

The game’s Steam page is up now: it will have 12 characters at launch, “selectable support characters influence your fighting style and grant special moves,” a “Unique “Flow System” w/Movement Centric Gameplay,” a “Single Player Campaign w/Original Narrative,” combo trials, and “Best in Class Net Code and Cross Play.” Also, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game is apparently a working title.

Aang, Zuko, and Kora were shown in the gameplay trailer, with Toff, Katara, Azula, and Sokka teased as well. While 12 characters at launch is on the lighter side, it will be interesting to see what the support characters entail: on its surface, this sounds a bit like Mortal Kombat 1’s Kameo system, where you select a secondary character who can be called in for assist attacks. It’s also good to hear that the game will have a focus on online play (which presumably means it will have rollback netcode) and that it will have cross-play, which is a big help for fighting games trying to maintain a decent playerbase..

Having been rescued from cancellation, the game is now being developed and published by Gameplay Group International, a new studio whose business model is to “revive canceled games,” according to a GamesBeat interview. The company also acquired two other games from Maximum Entertainment: Them’s Fighting Herds, a largely well-received fighter that’s development was abruptly ended, and Diesel Legacy: The Brazen Age, another game from that publisher.

Looking more into Gameplay Group International via LinkedIn, the company was founded by Victor Lugo, who was previously a Lead Designer and Creative Producer at Iron Galaxy. There, he worked on Killer Instinct as a Senior Designer/Character Lead. Beyond this, there are several ex-Maximum Entertainment employees at the company, including its Game Director and a Senior Game Designer.
