Sequel to A Minecraft Movie Greenlit for 2027

Sequel to A Minecraft Movie Greenlit for 2027

Warner Bros. has greenlit a sequel to A Minecraft Movie, with the premiere scheduled for July 23, 2027. According to a report from Variety, Jared Hess will be returning as director and will co-write the screenplay alongside Chris Galletta. The announcement was teased on social media, with the official X account for A Minecraft Movie posting a photo with the release date and the caption “building terrain.”

The follow-up film will arrive two years after A Minecraft Movie, which was released in April 2025 and exceeded box office expectations with a $162 million opening weekend domestically and $312 million globally. The film remained a huge success throughout the spring season, ending its box office run at $957 million globally, making it the second-highest-grossing Hollywood film in 2025 after Disney’s live-action animated remake Lilo & Stitch (1.03 billion).

A Minecraft Movie’s success was largely fueled by younger crowds and the various viral moments that spread across social media, including the “Chicken Jockey” trend. In September 2025, research by Ampere Analysis found that Minecraft’s monthly active users increased by 30% in April following the release of the film adaptation, with 54% of actives being lapsed players. This is part of a wider trend of film and TV adaptations of games that have ignited player bases in recent years.

Specifics around the sequel film’s plot and cast haven’t been disclosed yet, with Warner Bros. saying that details for the sequel will “remain deep in the mine for now.” The original film starred Jack Black and Jason Momoa, and followed a group of misfits who are guided by an expert crafter named Steve (played by Black) through the cubic world of Minecraft. Jason Momoa is producing the sequel alongside Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, and Torfi Frans Ólafsson.

Minecraft 2 is almost certain to find commercial success upon release, regardless of reception or quality. A Minecraft Movie was generally panned by critics and many cinemagoers, with the film currently sitting at 47% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 5.6/10 on IMDb.  The film does, however, have an 85% from users on Rotten Tomatoes, demonstrating its resonance with younger and online audiences.
