One Of Last Year’s Best Games,1000XRESIST, Is Coming to PS5 and Xbox Next Month

Critically-acclaimed sci-fi adventure 1000xRESIST is being ported by publisher Fellow Traveller to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles on November 4. It will also be released on Xbox’s recently price-hiked Game Pass subscription service, which is currently being boycotted as part of the ongoing BDS movement.

Set in an advanced sci-fi world and inspired by real-world events like ongoing protests in Hong Kong and the coronavirus pandemic, 1000xRESIST uses its fantastical setting to cast a lens on real social issues. You play as Watcher, one of the six sisters sustaining a society cloned from Allmother—a teenage girl who keeps the alien Occupants at bay. When Allmother dies, you need to traverse her memories to learn the truth of humanity’s destruction 1000 years ago.

An indie darling from last year, our review by Natalie Flores praised the game’s writing: “Its dense world has been created with deep care, and it was impossible not to be swept up by its intricacies. Exposition is rarely, if ever, delivered to you straight—1000xRESIST is a masterclass in making its audience yearn for answers.”

In the months since launch, the game remained a favourite among critics; our own Perry Gottschalk wrote about how its endings overlap with Evangelion, Willa Rowe recently covered how its in-game map doubles as a storytelling tool, and it ended up very high on our best games of 2024 list. It was also a finalist for several awards across both games and literary spaces, including the IGF Nuovo Award, and won the Peabody Award for Interactive & Immersive Work earlier this year.

As the first game from the Vancouver-based developer Sunset Visitor, 1000xRESIST has already achieved the studio’s goal of “telling diverse stories through the lens of speculative fiction”, drawing upon the team’s range of multimedia experience in the arts. With the game now on every major platform, we have to wonder what will be next for Sunset Visitor.
