New ToeJam & Earl Game is “in the Planning Stage” According to Co-Creator

ToeJam & Earl co-creator Greg Johnson recently revealed in a Reddit AMA that a new game in the franchise is “in the planning stage.”

Johnson was promoting a Kickstarter for his latest project, Dancing with Ghosts, and taking questions from fans when he was asked if there was any news related to the classic franchise. Johnson replied, “I can say that the new game is in the planning stage. We intend to make it happen. It’s going to be developed by a third party, design led by the infamous and talented producer of [ToeJam& Earl: Back in the Groove], Nap [Anthony Naplitano], and will be a combo of games one and two and incorporate some of the design ideas of the original game 2 that never got made.”

This planned project would be the fifth game in the Toejam & Earl franchise, with the original game having been released on the Mega Drive / Genesis in 1991. The series was rebooted in 2019 with ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove, and a film adaptation was announced in 2022 at Amazon. When asked about the film and whether it would be live action or animated, Johnson said, “I’m not 100% sure as it’s out of my control but I expect it will probably be animated. I’ve read the script and really it could be either all animated, or it could be a mix like Sonic, as it’s primarily on Earth.”

Johnson also confirmed that credited producer for Back in the Groove, Matt Conn, would not be involved in the new game. Conn had previously created Gaymer X and was the CEO of MidBoss. In 2018, Conn stepped down as CEO after a number of allegations of sexual misconduct, workplace harassment, and underpaying staff

“I just realized I forgot to mention our original producer on Back in the Groove,” Johnson added. “We actually had two great producers. Matt Conn was the original producer and the game never would have been released if it weren’t for him too. Matt and Nap are both ToeJam & Earl superstars.”

Johnson’s Kickstarter for his current project, Dancing with Ghosts, is currently at $14,737 of its $35,000 goal. It is described as “a heartfelt ghost story set in a Thai River village – an interactive narrative about grief, friendship, and finding joy in life again.”
