Switch 2 Version Of Elden Ring Delayed To 2026 Due To Performance Issues

Unfortunate news for those looking forward to getting stomped by Margit again via their Switch 2s: FromSoftware has delayed Elden Ring Tarnished Edition from 2025 to 2026.

The official Elden Ring Twitter account posted this morning that “While development on #ELDENRING Tarnished Edition continues wholeheartedly toward release, we have decided to move the launch to 2026 to allow time for performance adjustments.”

FromSoftware’s Twitter account posted a similar message: “Regarding the Nintendo Switch 2 ‘ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition,’ which was scheduled for release in 2025, we have determined that additional time is required for game performance adjustments, and we will therefore be changing the release to 2026. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause to all users who have been looking forward to the release of this title. We will continue to make adjustments to deliver it in the best possible form, so we kindly ask for your understanding. Thank you very much for your patience.”

The news comes following a rough reception for the first public demo of the game out of Gamescom. While video footage wasn’t allowed, Nintendo Life recounted their experience with the game: “And then you get to the outside world and the frame rate just tanks. It’s really bad. And I understand why they don’t want you to see this because wowie zowie it is terrible.”

While the Switch 2 has generally impressed when it comes to ports of relatively graphically intensive games, it seems that FromSoft is having trouble getting Elden Ring’s massive open worlds to run properly on the device. Frankly, the studio isn’t exactly known for its technical proficiency, and when Elden Ring was released for PC, many took issue with shader compilation issues that caused the game to stutter.

Regardless, hopefully the company is able to figure the system out before they release their next game, The Duskbloods, a multiplayer Switch 2 exclusive that is supposed to come out next year.
