Luigi’s Mansion Headed For the Switch 2

Nintendo announced today that GameCube classic Luigi’s Mansion will be releasing next week on the Switch 2 via the NSO GameCube Classics app on October 30, one day before Halloween. This follows the game being shown in the GameCube Classics announcement in the Switch 2 Direct.

Luigi’s Mansion was originally released in 2001 as a launch title for the GameCube and was then remade for the 3DS in 2018. It follows Mario’s brother after he wins a mansion in a contest he didn’t enter, only to find out it’s full of ghosts. Gameplay revolves around vacuuming up money and ghosts as you navigate the many floors of the mansion, flashing a light in rooms to weed the ghosts out of hiding. The game is split into four parts and can be completed within a day, so there’s plenty of time to finish it before November.

Originally a cult classic, the game has come to define the character of Luigi, with two sequels and a significant amount of influence over his portrayal in spin-off titles like the Mario Party series and the Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. When there are ghosts and mansions in a Mario title, Luigi is sure to be around the corner. Which, since he’s also still a plumber (presumably?), begs the question: do ghosts need toilets? Or pipes of any fashion? A search on “ghosts bathrooms” just pulls up a lot of articles about bathrooms haunted by ghosts, which is no help to us here; if you’re a paranormal researcher who thinks they know they answer, please get in touch.

With this emulated re-release, the entire series is playable on the Switch 2 thanks to last year’s remaster of Luigi’s Mansion 2. Although the original was developed internally, the series’ current developer, Next Level Games, released their last game, Mario Strikers: Battle League, back in 2022, so a new entry for the Switch 2 may not be far behind.
