Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You Slice-of-Life Manga Gets TV Anime Next Year

As the anime boom continues, another beloved manga is getting an adaptation: today, it was revealed that Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You is getting an anime on Japan’s TBS station in 2026. The manga’s author, Jinushi, drew the following illustration to commemorate the announcement.

As its name would suggest, Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You is a low-key slice of life story about two adults who unwind after work by sharing some cigarettes. Sasaki is a middle-aged office worker stuck in a depressing, emotionally abusive job, whose sole solace are his daily interactions with the cheerful Yamada, who works at a local supermarket. One day, Sasaki shows up to find that Yamada’s shift is already over.

But as he leaves, he’s flagged down by a mysterious woman dressed in a leather jacket named Tayama, who’s looking to share a smoke. The two engage in small talk about Yamada, with Tayama having noticed the two’s interactions. Of course, at the end of the first chapter (minor spoilers), we find out the reason for this: despite their very different appearances, Yamada and Tayama are the same person. What follows is a wholesome friendship (lung cancer risk aside) between two working adults, as the series gently explores crunch culture and expectations towards women in service work.

Jinushi’s manga began on Twitter in March 2022, receiving more than 190,000 likes on their first chapter, before being picked up by Monthly Big Gangan magazine in August 2022. The series currently has 50 chapters, which have been compiled into six volumes with a seventh on the way in Japan. The fifth volume will release in the US on August 12, and the sixth on January 20, 2026. The staff and studio behind the upcoming adaptation have yet to be announced, but hopefully, this charming series gets the production muscle it deserves.
