Snowball Earth Is Getting An Anime Adaptation in 2026

Today, it was announced that Yuhiro Tsujitsugu’s sci-fi manga Snowball Earth will be getting an anime adaptation in 2026. The show will be handled by Studio Kai and produced by TOHO Animation.

As for the staff, Munehisa Sakai, who previously helmed Zombie Land Saga, will direct, with Takeshi Iwata serving as Assistant Director. Series Composition will be handled by Shigeru Murakoshi, who filled that same role on original anime like Apocalypse Hotel and Zombieland Saga, among others. Toshiya Kouno will be the Chief Animation Director and Character Designer, and they previously performed those duties on Insomniacs After School and ’Tis Time for “Torture,” Princess, respectively.

Studio Kai is a relatively new company, having been founded in 2019. They produced Uma Musume: Pretty Derby, Super Cub, the recent Captain Tsubasa adaptation, and the currently releasing Hell Teacher: Jigoku Sensei Nube, among others. They’re also currently working on adaptations of A Star Brighter Than the Sun, Sentenced to Be a Hero, and Kanan-sama wa Akumade Choroi.

Snowball Earth follows a mecha pilot named Tetsuo who barely survives a space battle against invading aliens, only to find himself locked in his escape pod. Eight years later, he crashes back on Earth to find it frozen in ice (fyi, “Snowball Earth” is a real-world theory that the Earth’s surface became entirely frozen during at least one previous ice age). From here, he sets out to find the remnants of humanity and get answers about what happened to the planet. The manga has been running since 2021, and has received eight volumes, with Viz Media handling English-language publishing. It has sold over 670,000 copies to date.

In addition to the show’s announcement, its website also includes a teaser visual, promotional illustration from the manga’s author, and a teaser video, which can be viewed below:
