Rhythm Adventure Game Unbeatable Delayed Due to “Unreleaseable” Progression-Blocking Bug

The day before release, rhythm adventure game Unbeatable has been delayed until December 9 due to a bug blocking progression in QA. Although the issue is serious enough to warrant a delay, the month-long setback will also allow the game to avoid competition from other games coming out in the next month.

First announced in 2018, Unbeatable is an anime-inspired rhythm game boasting a double album’s worth of tracks. In a world where music is illegal, perform concerts and explore the world as Beat, the band’s guitarist. There will also be an arcade mode separate from the story with various challenges, online progression and “unlimited” playtime according to the publisher. The site previously covered the game and its accessibility options during the 2021 Kickstarter campaign and many have been anticipating its release ever since.

In a statement from co-writer/director RJ Lake, he outlined how quality assurance testers came across a low-repro (low chance of appearing in repeated testing) bug that blocked progression that the team considers “unreleasable.” As console certification of updates takes time compared to on PC, fixing the blocker would require delaying the console releases, so developer D-Cell and publisher Playstack have decided to also delay the PC launch.

As with all delay announcements, Lake is keen to spin this into a positive, saying, “it gives us breathing room to do some pre-launch things we wanted to do.” Many in development say that a game is never finished so much as it is let go of, so we hope that this extra time gives D-Cell the chance to put out their game in the best shape they can.

After this delay, Unbeatable is now set to launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series consoles and PC via Steam on December 9.
