Hollow Knight: Silksong Will Be Playable at Gamescom Next Month

One of the most anticipated games in years, the elusive Hollow Knight: Silksong, will have a playable demo at Gamescom 2025 in Cologne, Germany, next month. Silksong’s Gamescom demo will be playable on the new Xbox ROG Ally handhelds as part of the hardware’s public premiere, as well as PC. Fans not in attendance at Gamescom will be able to watch a live broadcast of the demo on August 20 and 21.

Silksong was first revealed in February 2019 and has been in development for over eight years. Initially supposed to be DLC for the acclaimed retraversal action game, Silksong quickly grew in scale and became an independent sequel, with a long history of delays. The wait has created a sort of mythology around the sequel’s release, with fans jokingly (or not) predicting Silksong news at every major games event and then mourning Team Cherry’s silence. Fans’ desperation for news has led to intense scrutiny over every move Team Cherry makes, such as an elaborate ARG theory being born from a team member changing their Twitter profile picture.

The game is expected to release around Christmastime this year, as reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, but an exact date has not yet been announced. The Gamescom demo will be the first version of the game playable by fans.

Team Cherry’s partnership with Microsoft comes in the wake of numerous controversies for the tech giant. Just this past month, Microsoft laid off over 9,000 employees and shuttered studios working on highly anticipated titles, despite reporting record profits. Furthermore, Microsoft provides Israel with critical technology to aid in their ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people, which has resulted in the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) group calling for a boycott of all Microsoft gaming products, including the new Xbox ROG Ally consoles.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is not being published by Microsoft, and has been announced for pretty much every major gaming platform.
