We knew the Switch 2 got off to a hot start, but Nintendo just put out a quarterly earnings report that proves it. As of the last financial quarter, which ended on June 30, the system had sold 5.82 million units, while also moving 8.67 million games. Perhaps unsurprisingly, they also said in the report that Switch 2 sales topped 6 million in the seven weeks since the system launched on June 5. This cleanly beats out the previous console launch sales record held by the PlayStation 5, which shipped (this is different from sold) 3.4 million in its first four weeks.
Mario Kart World is the first Nintendo title in the modern era to cost $80, and with its tremendous success so far (Mario Kart Wii is the only installment in the series to get off to a faster start, and there were significantly more Wiis in circulation when it came out), it seems likely that Nintendo will continue to charge this price for certain first-party games going forward.
Additionally, Nintendo also announced that the original Switch has sold 153.1 million units as of June 30, almost eclipsing the Nintendo DS’s 154 million units to become the highest-selling Nintendo console ever. The PS2 still holds the all-time record for a game console with 160.3 million sold.
This news comes as Nintendo revealed today that “Pricing for the original Nintendo Switch family of systems and products will change in the United States based on market conditions, effective August 3, 2025,” including the base Switch, OLED, Lite, and certain accessories. The pricing change will most likely be a price increase in response to Donald Trump’s 15% “reciprocal” tariffs levied on Japan, which start on August 7. While Switch 2 prices will remain the same, Nintendo noted that “price adjustments may be necessary in the future.”
Coinciding with the Switch 2’s launch, Nintendo more than doubled its revenue for the quarter, making 572.3 billion yen ($3.8 billion). Despite this, they haven’t updated their sales targets for the Switch 2, which is still set at 15 million consoles sold by March 2026. While the Switch 2 is undeniably costly at $450 or $500 with the Mario Kart World bundle, at least so far, it seems that many are willing to foot the bill.
