In an article published to the Louisiana Office of the Attorney General’s website, it announced that Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill brought a lawsuit that alleges Roblox “has and continues to facilitate the distribution of child sexual abuse material and the sexual exploitation of Louisiana’s children,” “knowingly and intentionally fails to implement basic safety controls to protect child users from predators,” and “knowingly and intentionally fails to provide notice to parents and child users of its dangers.” Murrill is quoted saying Roblox is “overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety,” followed by a declaration that every parent should be aware of what’s occurring in the game.
The data after these statements should underscore to the uninitiated just how popular Roblox is. The article states that Roblox has nearly 82 million daily active users, followed by an age breakdown that shows 56% of Roblox users are under the age of 17. Interestingly, the facts here don’t even mention other milestones Roblox and the games it hosts have hit, like the massive player count the Roblox user-created Grow a Garden saw earlier this year.
A point is later made that there is no age minimum and requirement to verify age or parental permission upon sign-up—which won’t be true for long following the recent announcement of questionable A.I. age verification tools—and that this allows child predators to pose as kids. This is all followed by a few details on cases including child pornography and solicitation of sexual acts from minors. It ends by stating that Roblox is in violation of Louisiana law, and that the state is seeking permanent injunctive relief. Louisiana aims to prohibit the game from matters including, but not limited, to representing itself as having adequate safety features, attorney’s fees, and restitution to the State of Louisiana.
Unfortunately, this is far from Roblox’s first time making headlines due to its potential part in failing to protect children from harmful content or predators. In October 2024, the group Hindenburg Research released an astonishing report called “Roblox: Inflated Key Metrics For Wall Street And A Pedophile Hellscape For Kids” that detailed how the game may not only be inflating its player count to investors, but also failing in its approach to protecting children from predators and predatory spaces. Even before this widely-discussed report, outlets had discussed Roblox’s issues in regards to exploiting young users. In other words, while news around one of the most popular online games ever potentially being an unsafe space for kids should be surprising (and under different circumstances, maybe even taken with a grain of salt given the history of games being used as a scapegoat for societal issues), it’s really not. Now, it’s just a matter of seeing how Roblox responds this time.
