A24 Is Apparently Making a Netflix Reality TV Show Based on Overcooked

Strange things are happening. According to a report from Deadline, A24 is teaming up with Netflix to create a reality cooking competition series based on the video game Overcooked. It will apparently be in a similar vein to Netflix’s existing reality shows, like Nailed It! And Floor Is Lava.

The series is being executive-produced by several of the lead developers at Overcooked developer Ghost Town Games, including Gemma Langford, Oli De-Vine, and Phil Duncan. The project will be A24’s first attempt at a reality competition series.

As for what makes the news odd, while Overcooked and its sequel have been quite successful, winning awards at the BAFTAs and selling well enough to spin up an entire game studio from its original trio of developers, this definitely isn’t the first game you would envision getting a TV adaptation.

For those who haven’t played it, Overcooked and its follow-up are chaotic co-op cooking games released in 2016 and 2018, respectively. Presented from a top-down perspective, you and up to three of your (soon-to-be-former) friends team up to run a restaurant. You have to worry about preparing and cooking ingredients, plating orders properly, managing dirty dishes, and more, all while a growing gaggle of ravenous customers waits to heckle you. It doesn’t take long until even the best-laid plans go up in flames, putting your nerves to the test.

While it’s a very fun party game, video game adaptations are frequently reserved for big blockbuster experiences, frequently with more of a story focus, which is part of what makes Deadline’s leak of the information so surprising.

As for A24, it’s best known for producing boutique indie films, and while they’ve certainly leaned into television in recent years with shows like The Curse and The Sympathizer, reality cooking programs aren’t exactly in the studio’s existing purview.

While Netflix and A24 have declined to comment, it’s easy to imagine the show attempting to recreate the fast-paced chaos of the game. Regardless, this certainly wasn’t on anyone’s bingo card.
