Sony Announces Showcase Focused on Japanese Games To Air Tomorrow

Sony revealed on its blog that its next State of Play games showcase is airing tomorrow, and it’s a bit different than usual. Titled State of Play Japan it will run for around 40 minutes and will be entirely focused on games created in Japan and across Asia. It will stream on YouTube on November 11 at 5 p.m. ET.

It will be hosted by well-known voice actor Yuki Kaji (Eren in Attack on Titan, Todoroki in My Hero Academia, Adol Christine in the Ys games, etc.) and will be “packed with great games, interviews, and new looks at anticipated titles.” The stream will be in Japanese audio with English subtitles on the PlayStation YouTube channel.

Given that the showcase will focus on games developed in Japan and Asia, it seems fair to assume that it won’t include many first-party Sony titles. After the company hacked and slashed the legendary Japan Studio (Shadow of the Colossus, Ape Escape, Gravity Rush, Siren) to bits, the only major studios it has based in Japan, or Asia in general, are Team Asobi and Polyphony Digital.

Team Asobi is made up of ex-Japan Studio devs and released the acclaimed Astro Bot last year. However, considering how recently that game came out, we’ll probably only see DLC for it at most, and not a new major title from that team. Meanwhile, Polyphony Digital is behind the Gran Turismo games, the last of which came out in 2022, meaning it’s possible, albeit unlikely, that we could get an announcement of a new release—it’s much more probable that the game will receive DLC, a free update, or a PC port instead.

My personal pie-in-the-sky wish that probably isn’t going to happen is that based on Astro Bot’s success Sony will announce that they are once again going to be making fun, playful games again instead of focusing almost exclusively on dour “prestige” titles that need to sell 7 million copies to break even because they cost 300 million dollars to make, perhaps by bringing back Japan Studio or shoring up Team Asobi. Sony has gone all in on a specific type of “cinematic” game that has made their first-party output a bit repetitive, which is a shame considering its impressive first-party lineage on the PS1 and PS2. Oh, and it would be nice if we finally got that Bloodborne remaster/re-release, if nothing else, so livestream comments stop bringing it up every five seconds.

As for other predictions, it seems possible we’ll see upcoming titles from Capcom, like Onimusha: Way of the Sword and Resident Evil Requiem, something or other from Square Enix, such as Octopath Traveler 0 or Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, and perhaps more from several games developed in China, like Where Winds Meet and Phantom Blade Zero. Regardless, we’ll find out soon enough.
