Blippo+ Comes to Switch and PC in September

For months you’ve had to own a Playdate to get blipped. That’s about to change. Blippo+, the breakout hit of Playdate Season 2, is coming to PC and Switch in September, making the fictional intergalactic cable TV station available on actual TVs for the first time. It hits both platforms on September 23, which is a Tuesday—not quite Thursday when it comes to the best TV night (Thursday was always tops for the TV biz) but way better than the Friday night death slot.

I mention TV, of course, because Blippo+ isn’t really a game, not in the traditional sense. It calls itself a “cable television simulator,” and effectively it is just like watching TV. You turn it on, you stare at it, things that have the general shape of TV shows air on it, and it’s all a lot of weird, arty fun from weird, arty folk. If you’re old enough you might remember public access TV, probably the greatest and most bountiful source of inexplicable television weirdness across America throughout the second half of the 20th century, and Blippo+ absolutely has that vibe. Blippo+’s FMV alien TV shows are supposed to look off, like they aren’t a product of the professional American entertainment industry, and it really pulls that off.

Blippo+ is the brainchild of Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, who are also in the band YACHT. Bechtold recently told Jessica Gelt of the Los Angeles Times that they chose games as the medium for Blippo+ because it’s “still open to artist’s weird experiments,” and that’s sort of the whole ethos behind the Playdate—an unusual handheld gaming device whose two seasons have been full of experiments from top game designers. Even for the Playdate, though, Blippo’s original “1-bit” version stood out as an oddity; it’ll seem even more peculiar on a Nintendo system.

Bechtold, Evans, and composer Rob Kieswetter called on the L.A. underground arts scene to help realize Blippo+, and there are some recognizable faces in the mix. The comedian Whitmer Thomas, who has a role in the number one movie in America right now, Weapons, is in the credits, as is Three Busy Debras co-creator Mitra Jouhari, who can also be seen in The Bear (and heard in Comedy Central’s Digman.) And the YACHT members called on some of their friends in the music world; Phil Elverum of Mount Eerie and the Microphones is listed in the credits, and the legendarily deep voice of K Records owner and Beat Happening member Calvin Johnson can be heard in Blippo+’s channel guide. Calvin Johnson’s name might not mean a lot to most video game people, but there’s a certain kind of weirdo who might check it out exclusively because he’s involved. (I say “weirdo” with all love and respect.)

Basically, Blippo+ is a weird, arty thing that’s also genuinely cool and not just trying very hard to look it—which is rare in general, but especially in video games. If you’re into alternative comedy, underground culture, or public access TV, or miss staying up to watch the Liquid Television / 120 Minutes back-to-back block that ruled MTV’s Sunday late night schedule over 30 (!?!) years ago, you might want to check Blippo+ out on your Switch or PC come September 23. And if you’re still confused as to what exactly this thing is, well, first off, that’s kind of the point—there’s a limit to how much anybody can understand Blippo+—but also maybe the trailer will help a little bit. You can watch that below.
