Netflix Announces Cosmic Princess Kaguya! Anime Film, A Musical Reimagining Of A Classic Legend

Netflix announced Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, an original anime film which will debut on the service on January 22, 2026. It will be a retelling of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, a thousand-year-old Japanese folktale about a princess from the moon.

The film will be the feature-length directorial debut of acclaimed animator Shingo Yamashita, who is known for his key animation work on shows like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Ping Pong the Animation, as well as for storyboarding and directing the openings of Ranking of Kings, Chainsaw Man, Heavenly Delusion, Jujutsu Kaisen, and more.

The press release for the film offers the following description: “Set in the virtual realm of Tsukuyomi, the story unfolds as a live performance marrying original music with Yamashita’s signature style of polished visuals, emotive pacing, and dynamic 3D camerawork to boldly transform this classic tale for a new generation.”

“This is my first full-length original animated film,” Yamashita said to Netflix. “I poured into it everything I’ve learned about visual expression, my love for unique characters, and my deep affection for the internet culture that’s continued since the 1990s. It’s a bright, fun film — so please sit back, relax, and enjoy it!”

The film will be animated by Studio Colorido (Penguin Highway, A Whisker Away, My Oni Girl) and director Yamashita’s newly formed Studio Chromato. Character designs are by Hechima (The Idolmaster Gakuen) and Akihiro Nagae (Drifting Home).

As for the voice cast, it includes Yuko Natsuyoshi as Kaguya, Anna Nagase (Ushio in Summertime Render, Harley Quinn in Isekai Suicide Squad, Natsuko Hirose in Zenshiu) as Iroha, and Saori Hayami (Yor in Spy x Family, Yukino in Oregairu, Shinobu in Demon Slayer) as Yachiyo.

The soundtrack will include several producers well-known in the Vocaloid scene, such as ryo (supercell), kz (livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot.

The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter has been adapted in many anime in one form or another, perhaps most famously by Studio Ghibli in Isao Takahata’s brilliant The Tale of the Princess Kaguya.
