It seems that there are still good things in the world, because earlier today, it was announced that the excellent music-themed anime Girls Band Cry is getting a sequel film. While details are scarce, the movie will apparently continue the story, unlike the previously announced compilation films that will summarize the show. Its first teaser image can be seen below.
Girls Band Cry is a 13-episode series that wowed last year thanks to its well-written characters, expressive 3D animation, and catchy soundtrack. The story follows Nina Iseri, a high school dropout who moves to the city after suffering from bullying. However, things change when she meets Momoka, a former member of her favorite music group. After flipping a bunch of people off, the two eventually start a band after pulling in three more hot-mess musicians.
The upcoming compilation films Seishun Kyо̄sо̄kyoku and Naa, Mirai, will come out in Japan on October 3 and November 14, respectively. Beyond this, there are also a pair of games in the works. The first is a mobile game and the second is a bizarre-looking platformer called Momowasho. The Steam description reads “Momowasho, a mysterious mini-game born from the “Girls Band Cry” anime, has unexpectedly been released! Control Nina and Subaru and send Momoka back to her sofa at home!” It’s coming out on September 28 and very much has Flash game vibes.
While Girls Band Cry was a rare series that didn’t simulcast on streaming services as it aired in Japan from April 6 to June 29, 2024, luckily, the Toei Animation-produced show was eventually picked up by Crunchyroll for distribution. While the movie was apparently only just greenlit, and probably won’t be coming out anytime soon, it’s good to hear that we’ll be getting more of Togenashi Togeari and their messy music antics.
Speaking of anime that are getting film continuations, this season’s excellent yuri rom-com There’s No Freaking Way I’ll Be Your Lover! Unless… is also getting a movie. Its subtitle is ~Next Shine~ and it will eventually be released as a five-episode TV series. The film is coming out quite soon as well: November 21.
