The turn-based, cat breeding RPG from Edmund McMillen was first announced in 2012 and received a teaser in 2013, which was followed by a lengthy period of will-it-or-won’t-it-release for the game. Originally meant to be released under Team Meat, this early idea of Mewgenics would ultimately be put on hold as Mullen pivoted his focus to The Binding of Isaac prequel, The Legend of Bumbo. The developer would later buy the rights to Mewgenics from Team Meat and begin prototyping with co-creator Tyler Glaiel in 2018. He would share in 2019 that the game was officially back in development.
This release date announcement comes way of McMullen dropping a 50-minute long gameplay deep reveal video on YouTube, hosted by the co-creator himself. He shares the February 10 release date at the top of the video, then spends the remaining time showcasing what a run would look like in Mewgenics while offering comprehensive insights into the game’s mechanics and systems. The Steam page offers a few quick facts for those that don’t want to sit down for almost an hour (or just want to leave a few things to mystery), including a promise of over 200 hours of gameplay, over six classes with unique abilities, and more.
Outside of critically-acclaimed 2011 The Binding of Isaac, Edward McMullen is also behind the other massively popular 2010 hit Super Meat Boy. Considering how these two games have influenced years of games since their release, with current hits like Cult of The Lamb holding many similarities to The Binding of Isaac, it’ll be interesting to see how McMullen’s and Glaiel’s upcoming game lands with the current generation of games and players in early 2026. If nothing else, having cats will probably help.
