Bennett Foddy’s Baby Steps Is the Next Game Delayed Because of Silksong

Team Cherry’s recent decisions regarding the release of their upcoming title Hollow Knight: Silksong have been questionable. At Gamescom, a demo of Silksong was playable in a cross-promotional event with Microsoft’s new handheld console; the collaboration came in the wake of Microsoft laying off 9,000 employees despite earning record profits, and BDS calling for a boycott of the tech giant due to their complicity in Israel’s genocide against Palestine. Furthermore, Team Cherry has also decided not to share early game codes with press, effectively forcing reviewers to crunch. And, of course, Team Cherry announced Silksong’s release date just two weeks before it’s slated to come out, which has prompted other small developers to delay their own releases; if Silksong’s release date was known earlier, other games could’ve avoided that week to begin with, instead of having to change their plans at the last minute.

Today, another title has been curbstomped by Silksong: Bennett Foddy’s upcoming adventure game Baby Steps. Originally planned to release a week after Silksong, Baby Steps has been delayed to September 23, as announced in a good-humored trailer.

Baby Steps is another entry in the “foddian” games genre—AKA platformers that are known for their unforgiving difficulty—which was popularized by Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy in 2017. Baby Steps follows Nate, a failson in a onesie, who has been mysteriously zapped from his rightful place in his mother’s basement and out into the open world. As Nate, you’re given the extreme task of learning how to put one foot in front of the other. The world is an open mystery unraveling before you; the only thing between you and whatever you’re curious to explore is your own ability to walk. Simultaneously hilarious and introspective, Baby Steps promises to be a delightful and rewarding struggle.

Baby Steps is being developed by Bennett Foddy, Gabe Cuzillo, and Maxi Boch, and published by Devolver Digital. There is currently a demo on Steam, and the full game will be available on PC and PS5—not so hard to avoid partnering with Xbox, now, is it?
