The statement identifies Hollow Knight: Silksong, which just got a September 4 release date during Gamescom, as the reason. The publishing team says “With 11 years under our belt as an indie publisher, we at Ysbryd Games are reasonably qualified to say that any point of 2025, on balance, has been or will be as brutal as market conditions can get when it comes to releasing a game. Crueler still, that we should find out with such short notice that Hollow Knight: Silksong will launch just one day after our planned release for Demonschool.”
Recognizing the massive amount of coverage that the sequel to Hollow Knight will be taking up in September, the team says it wanted to move the release date so that Demonschool gets “its own moment to be seen and talked about meaningfully.” Notably, Ysbyrd Games have already distributed Steam keys to press for a healthy review schedule, further showing there was full intention for the game to come out on its original release date, September 3.
In the time between now and November, Ysbrd Games says “Necrosoft Games and ourselves will continue to pour our time into enhancing and polishing up the game experience. For example, there will be more endings and minigames that the developers originally planned to patch in post-release, rather than leave them on the cutting floor; now it’ll all be part of the game’s release in November.”
This continues a growing trend of games that have moved their releases in lieu of Silksong’s sudden September announcement. Others have included the slot-machine roguelike game CloverPit and the Metroid-like Stomp and The Sword Of Miracles, notably both smaller games themselves. It’s understandable to have some trepidation about releasing next to a game that’s spoken about almost mythically, as excitement for Silksong has not waned at all after its announcement. If more proof is needed than the comments underneath the game’s release trailer, Hollow Knight itself just hit an all-time peak player count following the news about its sequel. As September draws closer, it will be seen how much of an impact Silksong actually has with those sharing surrounding release dates.
