Needy Streamer Overload Anime Announced, But Original Game Writer Removed From Project

The popular psychological horror game Needy Streamer Overload is getting a TV anime adaptation, but much like its source material, circumstances have already become complicated. Aniplex announced yesterday that the show is coming out in April 2026. They also revealed its first preview video, a key visual, and its main staff.

Aniplex describes the game as follows: “NEEDY GIRL OVERDOSE (the title of the game in Japan) is a multi-ending adventure game depicting 30 days in the life of a girl with an intense desire for validation who aims to become the ultimate streamer, with the support of ‘P.’” In it, you manage the streaming career of “OMGkawaiiAngel” as she attempts to accrue followers and negotiate the hell vortex of social media.

The game was released on Steam in January 2022, before later being released on Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5. It was a huge hit, selling over 3 million copies. It has also already received a manga adaptation, Needy Girl Overdose: Run with My Sick in March 2023.

The anime will be handled by Yostar Pictures (Arknights, Blue Archive the Animation). Masaoki Nakajima (New Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt key animation) will be directing. Nyalra, the writer of the game from WSS playground and Xemono, is credited for the original story and for supervision of the anime, which included planning and writing scripts for the episodes. This is where things get a bit messy.

Shortly after the anime was announced, nyalra offered a statement. He revealed that he had been removed from the management structure of WSS (Why So Serious Inc.), the studio behind the game, and that he had developed adjustment disorder and depression. He said that WSS had forbidden him from participating in promotional activities for the anime at risk of the series being cancelled. He also claimed that he hadn’t received full compensation for his work from them.

While he spoke highly of the anime and its staff after having worked closely with them on the series and encouraged viewers to support the show, he stated that he is currently consulting with his attorney over how to proceed to protect his “legal rights and integrity.” He also revealed that he and former production members are working on a new project, which will be announced this year.

Nyalra had previously announced back in September that he had established a new company to hold the rights of future projects, created a game proposal, received tens of millions of yen in investment, gathered the developers who had made Needy Streamer Overload, and kicked off production on a new project. He said that, beyond working on an upcoming 13-episode anime (presumably the Needy Streamer Overload series), he was also developing a short new visual novel game and a major indie game. In retrospect, it’s clear this announcement was in response to the tensions behind the scenes with WSS. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops going forward.
