Studio Trigger Surprise Drops New Web Anime On YouTube

Today, Studio Trigger released its latest anime The Lenticulars, a web series streaming on YouTube. The first episode is up now with English-language subtitles, and the series will release every Friday at 6 a.m. EST. This first episode has a five and a half minute runtime. Trigger had teased this project last week.

Having watched the first episode, “Work Gloves are Gloves,” The Lenticulars is a cute slice-of-life series that manages to get across quite a bit in its ultra-short runtime. Directed by Akira Amemiya (SSSS.Gridman, Inferno Cop, Kill La Kill), it aligns quite cleanly with his other work.

Specifically, it uses a sort of “moving paper cutout” visual style that was also seen in Inferno Cop and features the kind of grounded teen interactions found in SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon, right down to featuring a hilariously excruciating pregnant pause. Considering that Trigger’s general house style is over-the-top genre fiction, the entirely mundane stakes here are an interesting change of pace.

Amemiya seems to have handled virtually all of the production on this series himself, and in addition to direction, he was also in charge of series composition, the script, character design, storyboarding, episode directing, animation, and coloring. The music was composed by Rikiya Okada of 24chocolate.

As for the cast, Manato Ōkawara plays Rakkun, Uta Aihara plays Sawaki, Yū Nishizawa plays Miike, and Keigo Moriura plays Dony.

Overall, it’s a neat project and hopefully we’ll see more of this kind of thing from the studio going forward in between its bigger works, like this year’s delightfully crass New Panty and Stock With Garterbelt, and its upcoming shows, such as Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 and Delicious in Dungeon’s second season. The studio also recently contributed another episode to the anthology series Star Wars: Visions.
