Original Devil May Cry Is Coming to Switch Next Week

Get ready to fill your dark soul with light, as Capcom’s original Devil May Cry hits the Nintendo Switch on June 24. The game is priced at $19.99 and available for pre-purchase in English, Japanese, Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese and German.

Gamers will get to relive a classic with the very first installment of devil hunter Dante’s story. We’ll get to follow him once again as he journeys to Mallet Island to defeat Mundus, the king of the underworld. And just like before, Dante has the blood of a legendary demon warrior in his veins and revenge on his mind.

While Devil May Cry received an HD collection on console and PC last year, the Switch port seems like a stand-alone, leaving some fans happy to avoid the less-beloved, less-refined Devil May Cry 2, and others wanting more and confused at the decision to release just one.

The move to Switch also follows this year’s release of Devil May Cry 5, which gives us an older, more vulnerable Dante and has been heralded as one of the best in the franchise so far.

The Devil May Cry Switch release has also spun the rumor mill as fans hope Dante will appear in the forthcoming Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The rumors originated with an interview with Devil May Cry 5 director Hideki Istuno. When asked about Dante joining the Ultimate roster, Itsuno hinted that fans should campaign for a Devil May Cry Switch version.

“Devil May Cry has never been on a Nintendo platform,” Itsuno told VG247. “So it seems like the first thing to do would be to get Capcom to put Devil May Cry on a Nintendo platform in some way, shape or form—whatever game that might be.”

Well, now that time has come.

The classic action-adventure hack-and-slash has sold over 20 million copies worldwide. With its distinct mix of narrative and heavy, stylized combat including long chains of attack, Devil May Cry is arguably one of Capcom’s greatest gifts to the gaming world, and has spawned a swath of comic books, novelizations, collectibles and even an animated series.

Loosely based on Dante’s Divine Comedy, Devil May Cry tells the legend of a demon swordsman named Sparda who rebelled against the devil in support of humans. Now, private investigator Dante uncovers that the devil is aiming to rise up against mankind once again.

Devil May Cry is next in a long line of recent Capcom ports to Switch with versions of Onimusha: Warlords, Okami and Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen already released. Three new Switch versions of Resident Evil games are due later this month.
