Ubisoft: No New Assassin’s Creed Title in 2019

Ubisoft announced at Gamescom this week that there will be no new Assassin’s Creed title in 2019. Instead, according to Gamespot, Ubisoft will continue to update the forthcoming Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. In the past, the series has seen a new title every year, which occasionally resulted in some shaky, buggy games—looking at you, AC: Syndicate.

With last year’s Assassin’s Creed Origins, Ubisoft proved they’re still capable of making really solid games under this title, as well as a willingness to step away from the norm. In Origins, and especially so with Odyssey, Assassin’s Creed takes a sharp turn towards the RPG genre. At E3 this year, when Odyssey was announced, Ubisoft promised players the ability to make lots of choices, including player gender, and, to fans’ delight, the ability to smooch whomever they choose.

Normally, the announcement that a game won’t be coming out would be a letdown, but maybe it’s the opposite here. Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, said at Gamescom, “The team really want to give, on a regular basis, some new possibilities for play, so when you get [Odyssey] this year, you’re going to get in for a couple of years, actually.” Ubisoft is showing the fans that they want each game to be an experience they’ll enjoy, rather than a rushed, messy slog.
